SwarmTv officially alpha

I'm drinking a cool beer while listening to some music I just downloaded..

It's party time, SwarmTv is officially alpha software..

All the Slackware users beware..
I made some Slackpacks for you to download, all the dependencies of SwarmTv that are not in official Slackware distribution.

So what does it do ??

SwarmTv can download torrents from an rss feed..

You allways get the latest files from your favorite provider..

The next step in development will be making it a lib to serve a graphical frontend, or some command line tool.
You could intergrate it in a game to allways have all players get the latest maps and textures..

I'd bett you can think up some more uses for this baby !

SwarmTv revision 75

So the new SwarmTv has reached revision 75.
And we are at number 12 of 21 23 on our Roadmap to Alpha..

That means, it downloads RSS files and adds them to it's internal XML database.
You can list and search that database.

Ranzbak has put a lot of effort in the internal design, so now we can code quite fast and efficient.
USAGE : ./SwarmTv [-a url] [-l] [-L] [-c url] [-[i][sS] query]
-a: add rss (requires url)
-l: list
-L: list all
-c: show content of channel (requires url)
-i: make search case insensitive (use before -s or -S)
-s: search channels and descriptions (requires a query)
-S: search channels and content with descriptions (requires a query)
-h: display this help messege.

EXAMPLE: ./SwarmTv -a http://www.legaltorrents.com/rss.xml -l
EXAMPLE: ./SwarmTv -iS title
Remember this is pre alpha software, so it will proppably not be usefull..
But you can download it in bzip2, gzip and zip format.
Or use subversion:
svn co http://svn.etv.cx/svn/SwarmTv/trunk SwarmTv [Read More!]

Freenet 0.7 (616 .. 621 and rising)

Download freenet 0.7 alpha.
Important note for first time users

Freenet 0.7 is different to most other P2P networks in that, to protect your security, you only connect directly to other people you trust, but through them you gain access to the entire Freenet network.

When you first start Freenet 0.7 your node will not know any other nodes on the network, you need to connect to other nodes - at least three. Ideally you should find people you trust that are already part of the Freenet 0.7 network and connect to them, but if that isn't possible in the early stages of the Freenet 0.7 network you can try connecting to the irc server irc.freenode.net and join the channel #freenet, to see if anyone will connect to you.

If you have a firewall or a NAT box click here for some info. [Read More!]

SwarmTv progress and compatibility

As posted before, friday I was at a workshop on technical and legal aspects of peer-to-peer television.

It was nice to hear about our competition and see that the are verry little compatibility issues..

The workshop was also the launch of Tribler (as seen on boingboing).
I personally don't like tribler that much.. they seem a bit naive in a couple of areas.
  1. Decentralised community systems tend to have a downward spiral, because no top level moderation can be done.
  2. Using friends to speed up your download doesn't work.. it just generates more overhead for the origional seeder.
But it's a study model, so who cares ;)

I did have a great time meeting and greeting some people in the industry. [Read More!]
